Tells the stories of the scouts, coaches, minor league managers, and front office personnel whose love of baseball helps keep the sport alive

A minor league manager, a batting practice pitcher, a stadium public address announcer, and a team trainer are among those interviewed in this study of baseball's supporting cast. Like Mike Bryan's Baseball Lives ( LJ 4/1/89), the aim is to spotlight the "foot soldiers" of the sport. In many cases they are people who once played the game but for various reasons (injuries, retirement, lack of talent, etc.) opted for off-field positions rather than leaving the game entirely. Unfortunately, although Allen is a sports columnist and author of numerous baseball books, his conversations scarcely dip below the surface, leaving the reader with only a glimpse of the person or profession. A marginal choice.

Allen looks at those people connected with the national pastime who do not appear in the lineups but help make the game successful. Some are former players, like Bill Rigney, Vada Pinson and Eddie Lopat, who have turned to managing or coaching, while others are batting-practice pitchers, umpires, public address announcers, scouts, groundskeepers. Allen ( After the Miracle ) does a commendable job of showing how each of his subjects makes a contribution, although the content is heavily weighted toward New York-area personnel. Most interesting is the chapter on American League public relations director Phyllis Merhige, one of the few female executives in the sport.
