From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-6-- In large format, similar to Pyramid of the Sun, Pyramid of the Moon (Macmillan, 1988), Fisher recounts the history of the Western (Wailing) Wall of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. Briefly, beginning in Abraham's time, he chronicles the building and destruction of the First and Second Temples, Palestine's occupation by various cultures, and the history of the Jewish people in the Holy Land to the present. A chronology and a well-defined map of the area further clarify the information. Dramatic, two-page paintings in black-and-white acrylics showing architecture, costumes, and weapons of various periods enliven the text. Small symbols (in purple) representing the various cultures mentioned--Jewish, Babylonian, Persian, Greek, Roman, Christian, and Islamic--accent each page. Fisher successfully presents a complex chunk of history in a simplified attractive format, making it comprehensible even to those unfamiliar with the topic. As the only history of this important archaeological landmark for young people, this book is a good supplement to collections on Israel. --Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH

From Publishers Weekly:
Fisher has created a simple yet dramatic history of the Jewish people in Palestine, using the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem as his focus. The Western, or Wailing, Wall is actually the remains of the Second Temple (built nearly 2500 years ago). The Wall also stands above the remains of the First Temple (built 450 years before). To contemporary Jews, these ancient stones are sacred. Fisher masterfully telescopes almost 4000 years of history (emphasizing the events before 70 B.C.E.) into this brief, stirring picture book. In the handsome style and black and white tones now familiar from books like The Great Wall of China , Fisher portrays spiritual meaning and the history of conflict through the image of this wall. Included is a chronology from 1900 B.C.E. through 1967 as well as an excellent map. Ages 6-10.
