Over half the volume is devoted to the years 1479 to 1808; the three centuries from the sixteenth to the nineteenth are emphasized, not simply because this was the period of the primary transmission of Spanish civilization to the Americas, but also because the great body of Spanish institutions that would most affect the colonies did so in the form they acquired at that time. To treat Spain's gifts to Spanish Americas as complete by 1492 is, the author believes, as incorrect as to discuss the English background of American history only up to 1607, when Jamestown was founded. Chapman traces Spain's history from its prehistoric beginnings, showing Spain's influence on the civilization and culture of the Americas which provides vital knowledge for our present-day relations with all of America south of the Rio Grande.
