About the Author:
Diane Siebert is the author of Mojave, a 1988 Booklist Children’s Editors’ Choice, a 1988 Notable Children’s Trade Book in Social Studies, and a 1989 Teachers Choice, and Heartland , a 1989 Booklist Children’s Editors’ Choice, a 1989 Notable Children’s Trade Book in Social Studies, and a 1990 Notable Children’s Book in the Language Arts.Ms. Siebert lives at Crooked River Ranch, Oregon.

Grades 3-7--Images roll across the pages as readers follow a motorcyclist on an exhilarating journey through towns, cities, and countryside "sharing roads with trucks and cars/both hands on the handlebars/there's the motorcycle guy/on his cycle/riding by." Steady, unfaltering rhythms and unique rhyming patterns playfully re-create the vehicle's movement: "wide roads/side roads/perfect-for-a-ride roads"; "hot bikes/cool bikes/enough-to-make-you-drool bikes." Jenkins's mixed-media paintings complement the poetry seamlessly, conveying the same sense of energy and movement with streaks of color and varied perspectives. The art captures the diversity of riders who love the freedom of the road. Readers will be drawn to Jenkins's detailed landscape backgrounds and creative use of superimposed road signs. This book is a rousing tribute to the pastime, and it successfully joins Siebert's other transportation tributes. It could be read independently, but it would also make a great read-aloud.
