The books are co-written with Graham's wife, Catherine. The first edition of Bay Area Backroads appeared in 1988. Combined with one or more of the standard guidebooks such as a Fodor's or Frommer's, or some of the better California guides such as Randolph Delehanty's California: A Guidebook (LJ 6/1/89), Backroads will enhance any tourist's experience. Standard guidebook information is included--directions, prices, addresses, phone numbers, hours, acceptance of kids, pets, etc. The subjective descriptions are both enjoyable and entertaining. The books are strongest when they are covering sights closest to San Francisco. The farther away they get--and they get up to Mt. Shasta, down to Ojai, and east to Bodie and Yosemite--the less comprehensive and authoritative they become. All in all, though, these are very useful and pleasant guides. And, most important, the Grahams don't list every backroad secret, so the reader can still find some adventure for him or herself.
