Science writer Pellegrino worked with Bob Ballard to find the sunken wreck of the Titanic in 1987. He looks at the story from a new perspective, comparing the ship to the Challenger space shuttle. Just as the Titantic was deemed unsinkable, so the Challenger was considered virtually fail-safe. Pellegrino's book is a complement to Ballard's Discovery of the Titanic ( LJ 1/88). Pellegrino concentrates on the crew's reaction to the discovery, delving into Ballard's character and that of his colleagues. Pellegrino also draws on new information to give a more thorough explanation of the destruction that the ship endured and a vivid reconstruction of its last moments.
