The first concise book of essential Welch-isms, abridged from the bestselling Get Better or Get Beaten

Jack Welch built a career out of fighting waste. 29 Leadership Secrets from Jack Welch follows in Welch's footsteps, boiling the legendary CEO's leadership successes down to 29 strategies that made GE the world's most competitive companyand Welch the world's most successful and admired CEO.

This all-in-one Welch reference updates material from Robert Slater's bestselling Get Better or Get Beaten, and is today's ultimate fast-paced, no-nonsense handbook on the ways of Jack Welch. It taps into the heart of Welch's courage, innovation, and leadership success by examining simple leadership secrets that include:

  • Managing less is managing better
  • Make quality the job of every employee
  • Have global brains and vision

About the Author:

Robert Slater is the author of a number of bestselling business books, including four books on Jack Welch. A veteran journalist with more than 25 years of experience with Time, Newsweek, and UPI, Slater is widely regarded as one of the world's foremost authorities on General Electric and Jack Welch.

From Publishers Weekly:
Here's a quick read on the leadership principles of the former GE CEO who's often considered one of the 20th century's greatest business leaders. Though his reputation has been somewhat tarnished by his opulent retirement package as well as a messy divorce, his "GE Way" of management is still highly regarded. Slater, a long-time Welch watcher, offers an abridged version of his 2001 Welch tome, Get Better or Get Beaten. This version is perfect for airport reading, though it delivers little of the struggles and setbacks that must have helped form the backbone of Welch's wisdom. Instead we get the platitudes, presented in 29 highly formatted and easy-to-grab chapters. All the instruction is self-evident, told in tiny anecdotes, and followed by a set of "Welch Rules" ("Get the most out of your employees"; "Promote the three 'S's': speed, simplicity, and self-confidence"). There's food for thought here, but not very much of it. This volume's selling point-its brevity-is also its downfall: it feels too much like leadership lite.

Book Description Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This is an abridged, paperback version of the 2nd edition of Get Better or Get Beaten, which sold more than 36,000 units, with about 23,500 copies in the trade (in its first full year of publication). However, while that book performed well, some readers felt that the book---and the leadership secrets---could have been more concise and easier to read and apply. This is that book. This is the streamlined Get Better or Get Beaten book, stripped of excess "fat" and narrative that made the book 200 pages. This book is a short, fast paced book that reads like a "manager's little instruction book." This book, which Welch has told us he refers to when he gives a speech, includes the principles and techniques that helped make GE one of the world's most competitive companies. The greatest difference with this edition of the book is that it has been boiled down to its absolute essence. This book will be the "fastest" Jack Welch course ever published. It will still include all of the secrets, and also show how they can be applied to all businesses, big or small. This practical, updated guide will inspire and motivate any manager who wants to know how Jack Welch got things done. The new edition will tap the source of Welch's courage, innovation and success with such deceptively simple leadership secrets as: Managing less is managing better; Evaluate your business with a fresh eye; Make sure the customer feels quality; Use E-business to put the final nail in bureaucracy; Listen to the people that actually do the work; Ignite an e-business revolution; Live and breath quality---and make it the job of every employee; Have global brains and vision; Build the service business to maintain double digit growth; For the 800,000 people that read Jack's own memoir (Jack, 496 pages), this will be a welcome, Cliff Notes type version of the strategies that made Welch - and GE - the world's most competitive and admired company. Presents Jack Welch's leadership successes down to 29 strategies that made Welch the world's one of the most successful and admired CEO. This book examines simple leadership secrets that include: managing less is managing better; make quality the job of every employee; and have global brains and vision. This item is printed on demand.
