This is a work of truly monumental proportions that is a synthesis of data derived from both Soviet and other sources, including the great co-operative programmes of IGY, IGCY and the International Year of the Quiet Sun. The editorial board, headed by the Admiral of the Fleet of the Navy of the USSR, was composed of 28 senior officers of the armed forces and eminent scientists. The Atlas is intended for use by scientific workers, officers of the Soviet Army and Navy, masters and navigators of the Merchant Service, and as a teaching tool. It rightly claims to bring together far-ranging material in an interesting and attractive presentation.
...in no other single publication is so much information compiled. for the two oceans. Because one of the most useful functions of an Atlas is to provide the global context for more precise and detailed localised studies, this Atlas will be of recurring value to oceanographers. It is indeed fortunate that it has become more widely available through this edition outside Russia.
