During the past two centuries UK technological leadership eroded as the rest of Europe, then the USA followed by Japan, and now the rest of the Pacific Rim countries learnt the importance of nurturing high technology skills and capabilities. Today, the global economy is at a watershed as new geographic markets emerge, new product applications utilizing new technologies proliferate, and new high technology manufacturing nations become established. The challenge to the UK is to re-establish a leadership position in this evolving and highly competitive marketplace.
