The first edition of The Mammalian Myocardium was published in 1974. It presented the "state of the science" for the heart as it was known at that time. Over the past 20 years, knowledge in the biological sciences has grown at a phenomenal rate and the field of cardiac function is no exception. New knowledge and insight have developed, particularly at the cellular, subcellular, and molecular levels. New techniques in molecular biology, structural analysis, ion measurement, electrophysiology, biochemistry, and force analysis have allowed probing and measurement of heart cell function at its most fundamental level.
