From the Back Cover:

In the new Second Edition of this widely used resource, authors Fran Levin and Mary Alice McCullough offer new teachers and alternate route teachers a wealth of hands-on advice and ready-to-use strategies for successfully navigating their first year in a classroom. Designed to provide guidance to professionals in all content areas, the book covers the important issues new teachers face as they begin their careers as educators—classroom management; unit and lesson planning; assessment and evaluation; literacy instruction; literacy in the content areas; working successfully with English Language Learners, struggling readers, and students with special needs; using technology effectively in the classroom; and making a successful home-school connection. For alternate route teachers in particular, it effectively bridges their existing information gap as they complete their educational training.

Here’s what makes this new Second Edition stand out as a truly invaluable resource:

·         A new chapter on Using Technology to Support Literacy (Ch. 8), helps teachers understand how to incorporate technology effectively into their classrooms.

·         Chapter 5 on Literacy Instruction K-12 includes a wealth of information for secondary school teachers who are facing the challenges of students with reading difficulties—including information for teaching English Language Learners, struggling readers, and students with special needs.

·         Chapter 6 on Literacy across the Curriculum helps new teachers teach their content material using specific strategies and ideas and includes updated references and a section on Online Resources.

·         Chapter 7 on Helping All Students Find Success includes new information for teaching all students, especially those with literacy challenges, and includes updated references and a section devoted to Online Resources.

·         Throughout, the book includes a strong focus on supporting literacy instruction, including greater attention to students who present literacy challenges to their teachers.

Chapter 9 on the Home-School Connection includes numerous online resources for teachers to use to communicate with families.

Reviewers rave!

“A specific strength of this text is its emphasis on the use of literacy skills across the curriculum and across all grade levels, a concept often overlooked by upper level and content area teachers. An additional strength is the promotion of individual reflection, encouraging new teachers to consider their abilities and styles throughout the planning and implementation process and allowing individualization of the teacher experience.”
