This is an historical novel that begins in Ulster in the 1840s. One day on an island off the Ulster coast the body of a drowned sailor is washed ashore. The young girl who finds the body becomes haunted by him. She eventually marries the local schoolmaster and they emigrate to Canada.

On the northern coast of Ireland, young Mary O Malley embraces a drowning sailor washed ashore by the tide. So begins her family saga. Fleeing the great famine, she migrates across the Atlantic, through quarantine sheds and over the inhospitable land of the Canadian Shield. Her descendants trek from Port Hope to Montreal, from Ottawa to a house on the shore of Lake Ontario. Now Esther O Malley Robertson, the last of the O Malley women, is on the move.
About the Author:
Jane Urquhart is the author of five internationally acclaimed and award-winning novels. She is also the author of a collection of short fiction and three books of poetry. Urquhart has been named a Chevalier dan l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France and received numerous honorary doctorates from Canadian universities and has been writer-in-residence at the University of Ottawa and at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and, during the winter and spring of 1997, she held the Presidential Writer-in-Residence Fellowship at the University of Toronto. She was born in Little Long Lac, Ontario, and grew up in Toronto.
