Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. London. Jonathan Cape Ltd. 1960. Originally published in 1933, this is a first printing of the new illustrated edition. Hard Cover. Red boards with bright gilt titles to spine and vignette to upper board. Top edge stained red. Fore edge foxed but text not affected. Corners and spine ends of boards are all sharp. No markings in the prelims. Very good plus condition. The unclipped pictorial jacket does have some wear with chipping at the spine ends and panel, knocks to the corners and quite a large closed tear on the spine which has been professionally repaired. Condition is good plus. The jacket will be covered with an archival quality, inert removable protective sleeve. Profusely illustrated with charming contemporary engravings; frontis, chapter headpieces and many more in the text. This novel was successful and reprinted a number of times and demonstrates T. H. White's appreciation for history, though on a less grand level as his later work. His main character Mundy acts as a conduit through which the history of Victorian England passes, from life as the son of a horse groom of the aristocracy to a private in the Zulu Wars, and to the end of his days as "a relic of a bygone age" as motorcars press him out of his life as a coachman.
