Crewdson, a journalist, combines case histories and literature reviews to summarize the basic concerns involved in the sexual abuse of children. His is not a scholarly study but rather a presentation of cases currently in the news supported by brief critiques of research. Of topical interest is the emphasis given to concerns involving caretakers of children. Recommended as a general introduction to the topic. Faller, a professor of social work specializing in child abuse, writes mainly for clinical practitioners in the mental health professions. While she also uses case histories and literature reviews, she provides a much more structured, in-depth, and scholarly approach to the analysis of specific issues. Among the areas she examines are differing diagnostic approaches, the relationship between victim and assailant, assessment of abuse allegations, and intervention techniques.
