It was not until 1819 that hayfever first emerged as a distinct disease, and not until 1873 that the etiologic relation of pollens was discovered. As the first investigations were made in England, where the ragweed and wormwood pol lens - the chief causes of hayfever in the United States - are not found, our knowledge of the specific hayfever pollens was for many years vague and misleading.
