The death of the last Plantagenet on the field of Bosworth may be said to have marked the Opening of a fresh chapter in the evolution of social life in Eng land. The Old order of the sword as the regulator of property and winner of possession gave place to the new dispensation of legal surety, and henceforth deed, covenant, and indenture, with all their accompanying sleights of word, and cunningly contrived forms of attack and defence, became the basis of human society.
