This book offers a critical approach to fiction based on the principle that every story is written out of the emotional impulse, or a series of emotional impulses, whose satisfaction may be equated with pleasure. The stories have accordingly been arranged in such a way as to form a voyage of discovery through various rounds of emotional satisfaction in fiction, starting with those which are easy enough to recognize and describe and moves in on to others, which gives us just as much gratification, but which proved rather more elusive when we try to analyze or define their components.
