Using Gallup polls conducted between 1965 and early 1986, Gallup and Castelli give us a fleshed-out portrait of contemporary American Catholicism. Each chapter treats a particular aspect, such as religious practices or political beliefs, by situating it historically and concluding with an interpretive summary. Because most of the poll included Protestants, the book also enhances our understanding of contemporary Protestantism. Except for considering belief in angels under superstitions, the discussion is noncontroversial. Though a similar analysis can already be found in Andrew Greeley's American Catholics Since the Council ( LJ 11/15/85), it lacks the raw data provided here.
