Gr 3-6 Although a welcome antidote to many saccharine presidential biographies , this volume nevertheless has several serious flaws. Blassingame presents the American presidents in a realistic light with warts intact. Grant's drinking problem and Harding's possible murder by his wife are mentioned, if not examined in depth. However, repetitious phrases, such as ``he was a good general but not a great one'' applied to both Washington and Grant, are glaring. Blassingame also perpetuates some myths, including the idea that Dwight Eisenhower became an Army man only by chance. The historical photographs and drawings used throughout add a great deal to understanding the times discussed. Included are shots of flagpole sitters during the Calvin Coolidge tenure and the famous cows on the Taft White House lawn. Illustrations of the Presidents as children and of family and current events are used effectively. With no index, it is somewhat misleading to call this book The Look-It-Up Book of Presidents, even though a chart outlining the major events of each Presidency is included.
