PreSchool-Grade 1 Hollyn describes her holiday confection as a "Swedish Nutcracker. . . for very young children." The parallels with Hoffmann's tale are there, and with many another Christmas story too. At midnight on Christmas Eve the toys in the nursery come to life. The dolls, wooden soldiers and stuffed animals are borne by snowflakes to "the land of Christmas Wood." There, welcomed by fairies, they feast and dance until Santa's passing sleigh signals the end of their festivities. The detailed watercolor illustrations resemble "Brownie" Christmas cards, European in flavor and super sweet. The most original aspect of the book is the decorative borders, presumably the work of the author's design studio which markets the Toyland Collection, "a coordinated children's world of clothing, fabric, wallpaper, furniture, and fine china."
