About the Author:

Douglas A. Bernstein is Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, where he served for many years as director of the introductory psychology program. He is currently affiliated as Courtesy Professor of Psychology at The University of South Florida, and a Visiting Professor of Psychology at The University of Southampton in the UK. Dr. Bernstein chairs the Program Committee of the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology (NITOP), and is the Founder of the American Psychological Society's Preconference Institute on the Teaching of Psychology. In 2002 he received the American Psychological Foundation's award for Distinguished Teaching in Psychology.^Louis Penner is a social psychologist, formerly at The University of South Florida and now at Wayne State University as a member of the Center for Communication and Behavioral Oncology at the Karmanos Cancer Institute. He also has an adjunct appointment at The Institute for Social Research at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.^Alison Clarke-Stewart is Professor of Psychology at UC, Irvine (Ph.D. Yale). She specializes in developmental psychology and is known for her research on the effects of day care on children.^Edward Roy is Professor of Psychology at the University of Illinois (Ph.D. Univ. Massachusetts). He specializes in biological psychology and does research in Neuroendocrinology.

Synopsis:

This third edition of a mid-to-high-level psychology text includes updated "in-review" boxes and features on linkages and thinking critically, and the linkage programme has been revised and streamlined for easier use. A new chapter on research methods provides an overview of the various ways in which psychologists study data, and establishes the research foundation for the remainder of the text. It illustrates the steps taken in evaluating a research issue and introduces critical thinking. Recent scholarship is integrated throughout, and coverage of DSM-IV is included, together with over a thousand new citations, many from 1993 and 1994, and recent research on sociocultural issues.
