PreSchool-- A mother cat searches for her child, following him in and out of the yellow house. She calls but doesn't catch her kitten, Mack, until he gives up the game, sidles beside her, and allows her to wash him. The spare, patterned text is amplified and expanded by Spohn's dense, full-page oil paintings. Perspectives change as readers see closeups of Mother Cat from the front and from behind while the kitten, when visible, remains for the most part in the distance. Each scene is focused and intimate--a cat's-eye view. The backgrounds emphasize patterns--in the rugs, on the walls, the living room window, the kitchen floor--all with a predominance of different shades of green. The overall effect is striking and slightly askew until the final illustration, which exhibits calm, motherly love as Mack gets his bath. The peekaboo set should be delighted with the repeated disappearances and discoveries, the bold color contrasts, the adroitly simplified, evocative visual images, and the satisfying conclusion: captured at last, ``Mack'' gets a bath. The jacket reports that ``Agatha Rose is the pseudonym of a distinguished author and artist,'' but the spare, carefully crafted text here doesn't offer much of a clue to her identity.
