To celebrate her first birthday, Mouse "has baked an enormous cake," on which she places a single candle. Duck, the first arrival at the party, has a special gift--a candle for the cake. Several more animal friends come to celebrate, and all bring candles; the cake eventually contains 10, taxing Mouse's lung power to the utmost.
