From School Library Journal:
Grade 1-3 --When a monster named Fragus pillages the land of Kloon for gold and jewels, the kings order a dragon to deal with him, but they are swindled by three crooks who pocket the money and send back a large empty crate stamped "Dragon." Unbeknownst to the crooks, a tap-dancing mouse named Max and a bug named Clement have taken refuge in the crate. The kings are disappointed in the size of their dragon, but nevertheless they send Max out to face Fragus. Max tricks the monster into entering the box, which is then shipped back to the swindlers. Peace is restored to the land, and Max the Dragon's Place becomes the entertainment capital of Kloon. The colorful, slapdash illustrations are reminiscent of Quentin Blake, and the tongue-in-cheek humor may appeal to Roald Dahl fans. While hardly an essential purchase, this quirky book will be an entertaining addition where fractured fairy tales are popular. --Lori A. Janick, Parkwood Elementary School, Pasadena, TX

From Publishers Weekly:
When the kings of Kloon send off to Dilge for a mail-order dragon, naturally they expect something large and fierce. Imagine their surprise when they open the box labeled "DRAGON" and out pops a tap-dancing mouse named Max and his insect sidekick, Clement Farber. (The crooks who run Dilge have swindled the kings, taking their gold and sending an empty box--in which the tiny twosome has stowed away--in return.) In a classic case of mistaken identity, the kings assume Max is just a bit "on the skimpy side," and sic him on Fragus, the greedy, odorous monster plaguing their kingdom. During the resulting shenanigans, Max's fancy footwork dazzles the monster right into the now-empty dragon box and back to the con artists in Dilge. Stern's gloriously goofy tale is the stuff of high farce, reminiscent at times of Roald Dahl, and his illustrations--artful scribbles, really--play a perfect counterpoint. Ages 3-7.
