Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, xiv, 376 pgs, index, notes, maps, appendix. Reprint of the Indiana University Press edition of 1959. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Near fine with minor shelf soiling. Interior is clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Facsimile reprint of the Indian University edition of John Bell Hood's narrative as a Confederate general. He led men in the battles of Second Manassas, Gaines's Mill, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Chickamauga. Hood suffered from the war with enormous wounds to his body and his military reputation. Blamed by contemporaries for contributing to the defeat of the Confederacy, Hood attempted to refute the accusations. Advance and Retreat is a highly controversial book. It is however also full of invaluable information and insights into the fighting at Dalton in early 1864, and both the Atlanta, and Tennessee Campaigns. This book is Hood's attempt to rebut the claims against him and restore his standing. REFERENCES: Dornbusch II 2798 (reprint). Seller Inventory # 0622058
