From School Library Journal:
ea. vol: illus. by Anne Canevari Green. 96p. diags. illus. maps. photogs. reprods. glossary. index. (First Bks.). CIP. Watts. 1986. PLB $9.40. Grade 5-8 Each book takes a comprehensive first look at its subject in a clear, concise, readable text. The chapters have black-and-white captioned photographs, illustrations, and diagrams that elucidate the text. The glossaries are adequate, but the lack of a pronunciation guide is unfortunate. Gallant makes it clear that the theories presented (gathered from the evidence of rocks and fossil records and knowledge of how chemicals of life form) are what scientists believe happened. From Living Cells to Dinosaurs is not just another dinosaur book, but rather a discussion of the evolution of the earth and its plants and animals from the Precambrian to the Mesozoic eras. Darwin's main ideas about evolution are included. The scope is broader and the reading level slightly higher than Elting's Macmillan Book of Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Creatures (Macmillan, 1984) and Greene's Before the Dinosaurs (Bobbs-Merrill, 1970; o.p.). Our Restless Earth discusses the theories geologists have formulated about the formation of the earth and the continual changes that have taken place. More comprehensive than Lambert's The Active Earth (Morrow, 1982), this should be a hit with young geologists. Interesting reading that will also be useful for reports because of the easy accessibility of facts through the index and chapter headings. Alice R. Arnett, Greenwood Elem . School, Louisville, Ky.
