After a brief explanation of the types of the disease and how insulin enables glucose to enter the cells of the body, the authors present several case studies of young people who have been diagnosed with the condition. In a reassuring tone, they inform readers that diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar, and that with proper treatment and diet it can be controlled. Later chapters include information on new treatments (stem cells, pancreas transplants, islet transplants) and improvements in insulin delivery (pens and pumps). Perhaps the most salient feature of this book, however, is the constant reminder of the importance of checking one's blood sugar often and of taking the necessary precautions to eat right and exercise.
