Marion Easton, now in middle age, has never known who her father was--but she does have a distant, half-complete, childhood memory of a seaside cave, of something dreadful happening in it, and of being saved in the nick of time by an unknown man when an incoming tide cut her off from shore. Where was this cave? What really happened? Could the saving-man have been her father? And just how, one might ask, could Marion have reached middle age without--well, asking. But learning what the painter Stella Harnaker was really like as a mother- -and person--helps answer that question. It is currently trendy for novelists to fashion a fictional tale around a true event, as Walsh does in this story about a 1939 lifeboat disaster in which many lives were lost. Marion, the middle-aged narrator, is summoned home following her mother's stroke. Long unspoken questions remain unanswered because her mother, an artist of some repute, has lost the power of speech. Marion's adult children, both at personal and professional crossroads, arrive on the scene to help her deal with their grandmother's incapacitation and subsequent death. All three end up in St. Ives, a coastal fishing village and artist's colony, to probe the mysteries of who Marion's father was, what part he may have played in a lifeboat tragedy, and how Marion's patchy memories of being trapped as a young girl in a serpentine cave figure into all this.
