It is impossible to recommend these titles to American gardeners, despite their interesting concept. Thoroughly British in tone, right down to the slang ("twee," "quite ahead"), they are as likely to mislead as guide a novice on this side of the Atlantic. Only the Pacific Northwest has growing conditions similar to the British Isles, while the rest of the continent must cope with either severe frost, drought, or overwhelming heat and humidity. Including delphiniums on a list of ten best perennials while omitting the fail-proof daylily dooms most beginning American gardeners to disappointment. The first two titles are very similar in content and approach--garden planning and basic planting for a suburban homeowner. First Time Planting aims to give suggestions of plants to use in various situations (north, south, east and west facing) and soils (acid or chalk, wet or dry). If the reader is willing to check the hardiness zones of the recommended plants in another source, it is possible that some useful material may be found, but this seems an unfair burden on a beginner. A better choice would be the volumes in the Burpee "American Gardening" series (Suzanne Bales's Annuals , Perennials, Vegetables and Alice Ireys's Garden Design, LJ 3/1/91).
