Making Enemies is the first volume in Francis Bennett's Cold War trilogy which is being reissued in Faber Finds. It centres around the race for the hydrogen bomb in 1947, a deadly global game of institutionalized deceit and lies in which human life is the cheapest commodity of all. Brilliantly evoking the paranoid and mutual mistrust of those early days of the Cold War this novel was widely acclaimed on first publication. About the Author:
Francis Bennett was educated at Radley and Cambridge. He worked in publishing for nearly twenty years, finally as the Group Managing Director of Thomson Books. In 1987 he co-founded Book Data, the first bibliographic agency anywhere to introduce full information about titles. He was its Managing Director from 1987 until 2005 when he was appointed Chairman. He retired from Nielsen BookData in 2006.For many years Francis Bennett served as the Vice-Chairman of the Book Development Council, the export department of the UK'S Publishers Association. He has Chairman of the Society of Bookmen and has served on many other boards, committees and panels. He has received a British Book Award 'Lifetime Achievement'. He now acts as a publishing consultant.

The action ranges from Cambridge to London, Berlin to Moscow, Helsinki to Washington, and the events, issues and tensions of the period are sharply defined. After the war, the Russians are racing to catch up with the West in the nuclear arms race, and a complicated plot is hatched by Andropov. He blackmails Ruth, a Russian physicist who is romantically involved with Stevens a nuclear physicist from Cambridge, into fronting an association of scientists concerned at the lack of safeguards in the Russian nuclear industry. The aim is to mislead their Western counterparts into thinking that they (the Russians) are further behind than they actually are. To make sure that the scientists are really concerned, a laboratory handling nuclear materials is deliberately blown up, along with the neighbouring block of flats. Struggling to make sense of this are Monty, a cynical Whitehall spook, Danny the son of Stevens and Ruth herself. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
