About the Author:

Carol Berkin, Presidential Professor of History at Baruch College and the graduate center of City University of New York, earned her Ph.D. from Columbia University. Her scholarly works include Jonathan Sewall: Odyssey of an American Loyalist (1974) and First Generations: Women in Colonial America (1996). Her most recent work is A Brilliant Solution: Inventing the American Constitution (2002). She has appeared on the PBS series Liberty! The American Revolution,and the TLC series The American Revolution. Active in historical circles, she has served on the Program Committees of both the Society for the History of the Early American Republic and the Organization of American Historians.
