From Library Journal:
Intended for the general reader, these two volumes attempt to present the most significant events, personalities, movements, and institutions of their respective centuries. The editors have published numerous books on historical subjects, and like their contributors they are academics, mostly from British universities. The volumes are arranged alphabetically, with articles signed by contributors. All but the briefest articles contain bibliographic references, and cross references are plentiful; in the 19th-century volume, an article on women's suffrage is extended by separate entries on the Married Women's Property Act (1857, 1870, 1878, 1882) and other related subjects. Drawing on late 20th-century scholarship, the articles nevertheless accurately reflect the views, beliefs, and biases of their periods. Non-European subjects seem reasonably covered, although a British emphasis can be detected. Biographical references are, however, selective. Wordsworth, Wollstonecraft, Shelley, and Dickens are given entries, but not Austen, Thoreau, or Dickinson-though some of these individual are discussed in broader articles, e.g., poetry. Other figures (e.g., Napoleon, Nelson) are treated in each volume from that century's perspective. China receives substantial coverage in both volumes, as do India, Africa, Native and African Americans. Science is well covered in both volumes, with key works of the period cited in the text. Most of the information in these two volumes is available in conventional sources-encyclopedias, historical dictionaries, and subject reference books-but the 18th-century volume in particular provides succinct and convenient compilations of a broad spectrum of subjects. These works complement Oxford's Dictionary of Twentieth Century History, 1914-1990 (Oxford Univ. Pr., 1993) and are recommended for academic and public libraries.
