PreSchool-- A visually attractive series of little books that offer predictable bibliotherapy. However, Erickson's writing is not condescending, and it is perceptive in its attitudes towards her intended audience. Do I Have To Go Home? addresses the common problem of a child who is having so much fun that he doesn't want to go home. I Like to Help and Waiting My Turn are likable, straightforward treatments of two of parents' biggest areas of concern. Erickson gives good, concrete examples of helping out and showing patience that are on a level preschoolers will readily understand. I'm Brave! tries to explain bravery in the context of a bruised knee, but bogs down when "bravery" is seemingly defined as not crying too much. In addition, this is the only book in which an adult male appears, which tends to reinforce the sterotyped attitude of "big boys don't cry." Roffey's bright, simple, and spare drawings carry the slight text along, but she fails to depict even one child of a minority group. The many Sesame Street books that deal with various emotions are textually equivalent and depict more diversity; the Joy Wilt Berry "Let's Talk About" series (Peter Pan) is less satisfying to children but reflects more care in illustration. --Joanna G.
