A history of the Ku Klux Klan from Reconstruction to the present day. Wade (The Titanic: End of a Dream) trods well-covered ground but manages to do so in a vital manner. Typical of his approach is his snappy beginning in which he counters the traditional conception of the Klan as having been born as a reaction to Reconstruction: ""Actually, the Klan had already been born and was active in at least three Southern states before any of the state governments were radically reconstructed."" The name of the organization came from the Greek word for ""circle,"" kuklos. ""Call it kuklux,"" James Crowe suggested, ""and no one will know what it means."" Added John Kennedy: ""And add klan, as we are all of Scotch-Irish descent.

The Fiery Cross is a powerful and frightening history of the Ku Klux Klan, from its beginnings as a Tennessee social club to becoming one of the most feared groups in America. Through vivid portraits of the group's leaders, Wyn Craig Wade reveals the Klan's disturbing, dark reflection of America's fears and prejudices. After the Civil War, during the Reconstruction, groups of Klansmen on horseback led night raids on independent Negroes, burning crosses and leaving threatening notes - "leave the county within thirty days or abide the consequences," one read. In 1915 D. W. Griffith's epic film, The Birth of a Nation, which depicted Klan members as heroic saviours of the old Southern society, led to a revival of the Klan after twenty years of decline. (Some time after a screening of the film at the White House, the Klan was honoured with the swearing in of President Warren G. Harding as a Klansman in the Green Room. Members of the swearing-in team were so nervous they left their Bible in the car, and President Harding became a Klansman with his hand on the White House Bible.) In the 1920s, the Klan moved its attention to Catholics, Jews, and "hyphenated Americans". The KKK practically took over the state of Indiana in the '20s, when the Hoosier state had a chartered Klavern in every one of its ninety-two counties and the Klan elected a governor and two U.S. Senators. The sensational kidnapping of a preacher's daughter by the state's Grand Dragon created a scandal that ended the Klan's religious and political domination of the state. Wade tells the remarkable story of writer Stetson Kennedy, who in the late 1940s went undercover in the Klan and revealed some of the Invisible Empire's darkest and most incriminating secrets. Kennedy's testimony in the Georgia courts resulted in the sentencing of various Klan ringleaders. Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # 142303
