Grade 3-5-- A slim, handsome book with a lavish display of excellent full-color photos of creatures amid melting snows and delicate wildflowers. Unfortunately, there are small problems throughout. Two of the three pictures accompanying the text on Arctic foxes show red foxes, and only the caption indicates the existence of red foxes in the region. Only the briefest mention of mosquitoes is made, although their numbers are astronomical in season, and afford high protein food for innumerable young birds. While the information is accurate, there is a startling, difficult-to-verify fact about a 14-year-long life cycle of a geometric moth, and the caterpillar in the accompanying photo is quite hairy, which is not a common trait in the geometric group. However, the volume is colorful, attractive, and approachable, and will certainly appeal to inquiring minds and report writers alike. --Patricia Manning, Eastchester Public Library, NY

Another striking photo essay from the team that produced Polar Bear Cubs (1989), this one depicting plants and animals during the short arctic summer. Matthews stresses unusual adaptations to the harsh environment: caterpillars that freeze and thaw for 13 years before becoming butterflies, rapidly maturing plants, and animals (e.g., the lemming) that produce as many as six litters in a single season. Guravich's color photos are outstanding: a boundless field of arctic cotton grass against a blue sky; the pigeon-like ptarmigan in fuzzy white winter plumage and speckled brown summer feathers; an inquisitive ermine poking his head from a melting snowdrift.
