PreSchool-Grade 1-- Another thoroughly satisfying story about tousel-haired Stina and her grandfather who lives by the sea. This episode involves a birthday visit to grandfather's friend Axel, also known as Stretchit. Bringing along a special lunch, Stina and Grandfather rouse a down-in-the-dumps Stretchit from his bed, and celebrate with a friendly meal. The man then regales Stina with a story of his adventures at sea, in which a washtub plays a crucial role. When the unabashedly tall tale ends, Stina is made the proud owner of the washtub, just the proper boat she was seeking for her toy hippo. Before leaving, she and Grandfather sing a lullaby and tuck Stretchit back into bed. Young children may not connect Stretchit's nickname with his propensity for exaggeration, but, like Stina, they will enjoy his antics and Grandfather's benevolent, understated humor. Wonderfully expressive double-spread watercolor paintings exude the atmosphere of the seacoast, lying on the pages like scenes from a film. Little embellishments, like anecdotes, sit in the white margins alongside the text.
