Grade 4-8--Historic Places . . .describes the significance of preserved and protected sites in North America, ranging from northern Canada to Puerto Rico and covering Indian and Viking settlements through to the Revolutionary War period. Arranged in alphabetical order rather than geographically, chronologically, or by cultural groups, the text is for the most part dry and overcrowded with facts. The cursory overview of 41 sites within an illustrated 53-page volume will bore rather than engage readers. Of equal aggravation are the accompanying color photographs of inconsistent quality. Some are excellent, while others are out-of-focus, overexposed, and/or out-of-date. The book clearly lacks the enthusiasm and personality of an author who has painstakenly researched each site first-hand. Natural Wonders of America, although also suffering from inconsistent photography, fares a bit better. Forty-two natural sites on the North American continent are described withreference to their natural history, their flora and fauna, and, when relevant, their impact on human populations. The text is more varied in emphasis and approach, and exudes more enthusiasm for the subject. Again the sites are arranged alphabetically, but here the index is better suited to its referenced material, making the book useful for trip planning and/or school research. However, America's Outdoor Wonders: State Parks and Sanctuaries (National Geographic, 1987) is more engaging and of higher quality. --Catherine Wood, Shelburne Museum, VT
