Alexander uses richly hued pastels for her illustrations of a young girl, her grandparents' farm, and the creatures of a summer night. While visiting the farm, the girl learns some interesting facts about fireflies from her grandfather. The colorful drawings and appealing cover represent the major changes in the book; the original edition featured a young boy. The brief, clearly written text is thorough enough to satisfy its intended audience. Julie Brinckloe's Fireflies! (Macmillan, 1985), for the same age group, is a softly illustrated, very readable story of a young boy catching fireflies with his friends at dusk. Joanne Ryder's Fireflies!
