This volume introduces us to Grace Wisher, the 13-year old African American indentured servant who helped to sew the original Star Spangled Banner in 1813. Essays trace the flag's historical import and its manifestations in contemporary culture. A focus is the role of art and artists in ensuring that the flag remains a living symbol. For Whom It Stands: The Flag and the American People is organized by the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture. The exhibition is curated by Michelle Joan Wilkinson.
