The years from 1900 to 1930 were a period of relative growth and prosperity for the 16 counties in southwestern Kansas. The good life collapsed in the spring of 1931, when a decade of dust storms, economic depression, and drought began. Farmers lost their land, businesses closed, banks failed, unemployment was wide- spread, and prices plummeted. From written and oral interviews with 114 people who lived through the "dirty Thirties" and who vividly remember those years, Riney-Kehrberg relates how individuals and families learned to cope with meager resources. Local, state, and federal aid, the assistance of friends and family, and the cooperation of newspaper editors, agricultural extension workers, elected officials, and other leaders enabled the communities to survive declining economic stability and adverse weather. By 1940, stability returned, and farmers and townspeople began rebuilding their lives. Readers will be impressed by the resilience and creativity of human beings determined to overcome a crisis. Highly recommended for rural sociology collections.
