Grade 1-3-- A much-needed revision (HarperCollins, 1966), this title is a useful introduction to the mechanics of speech. Outlining the workings of the lips, tongue, teeth, lungs and larynx, it offers well-written information and a variety of simple activities that will result in a good understanding of the process. Text revision is minimal, consisting of a few substitutions (the seven-month-old baby is now ten months old, and young Rufus's rabbit is now named Benji) and transitional phrases. The real improvement here is in the illustrations: lively watercolors have replaced the static black-and-white line drawings of the old edition. The characters are expressive and involved in a variety of activities, and look like real people; Dad is graying, slightly disheveled, and a bit overweight, while the kids look like they're ready for the playground.
