George Barclay flew in the Battle of Britain, in which he kept a diary which forms part of this text, and was later killed leading his squadron over El Alamein in 1942, aged 22. He was originally from Cromer in Norfolk, and this copy has his Service of Remembrance at Cromer Church in 1942 loosely inserted; this copy belonged to someone who knew him in Cromer (inscribed thus on flyleaf) and also has two press cuttings pasted to front endpapers on poems in memory of RAF pilots.
