A scary misunderstanding turns into a wonderful new friendship in this sweet story, illustrated with great charm by a talented new artist. Every day little Fay walks to school with her friends. Every day as she passes, a big, black dog barks ""hello."" But every day Fay ignores him. Until one day, coming home alone, Fay is forced to pay attention. The big, black dog growls angrily at her. ""SAY HELLO!"" he demands, terrifying poor little Fay so she can't eat a bite of lunch. Her concerned parents help Fay see herself and the big, black dog in a different light, and with new understanding and self-confidence, Fay makes a fine new friend.

About the Author:
Antonie Schneider was born in Mindelheim, in southern Germany, where she still lives. A former elementary school teacher, she has written numerous other books for North-South, including The Dearest Little Mouse in the World and Good-Bye, Vivi!
From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2 - Little Fay travels to school with her mouse friends, oblivious to a large black dog that barks, "Hello!" each day. Finally, the canine loses patience and growls at Fay, frightening her so badly that she can't eat lunch. Her father helps her understand that the dog only wants to be friends, and soon Fay bridges the species divide. Oversized watercolor illustrations capture a mouse's-eye view of the world. The animals' faces are expressive and entertaining. However, the text is choppy and the resolution is unlikely and abrupt. Thanks to her father's insight, Fay understands the dog's true intentions, runs to make amends, and forms a strong friendship. Carolyn Crimi's Don't Need Friends (Doubleday, 1999) captures the joy of unlikely friendship with more humor and a subtler touch. - Suzanne Myers Harold, Multnomah County Library System, Portland, OR
