Review:
Title: Franklin Township (Hunterdon) history comes to life in new book.

Author: Walter O'Brien

Publisher: MyCentral Jersey.com

Date: 3/21/10
Local history is living on in a new book for the "Images of America" series.
"Images of America: Franklin Township, Hunterdon County" features more than 200 vintage photographs and nostalgic stories collected by Dan and Marty Campanelli and Lora Willis Jones. Proceeds from the book's sales will benefit the nonprofit Rural Awareness, Inc. to fund community projects.
Dan Campanelli is a recognized watercolor artist of historic buildings. His wife, Marty, is a graphic designer.
"We discovered that Pittstown was the base for Moore Furman, who built his grist mill here and owned most of the town," Dan Campanelli said. "It's just a mile from our home ― we just gallop through history living here."
Marty said they became friends with Jones when they moved to town five years ago.
"When the book on Readington came out, we thought we could do one for Franklin and talked to Lora," Marty said.
Jones is the township historian and a board member of the Hunterdon County Historical Society and Hunterdon County Cultural and Heritage Commission.
At first the trio was concerned about finding enough photos to fill the book, but soon found themselves with pictures spread across a kitchen table, fighting over which to use.
Jones said the authors wanted to convey the history by telling the stories behind the photographs with a sense of humor, but with purpose.
"We wrote this book for two reasons," said Jones. "For people to appreciate the fact that we are still rural and agricultural and that we still have that heritage ― and to respect the people who all those years cared for the land and kept it for us."
