In the title story, Dutchman's Flat, it seemed a simple matter to the six men in the posse, catch the man who gunned down Johnny Webb in the Bon Ton. The squatter named Lock had shot him in the back and once they caught him, there wasn't going to be any trial. Lock would be summarily hung from the nearest tree. However, as the posse heads out into the desert in pursuit of the fugitive, it becomes only too clear that he knows the desert even better than they do and that from one vantage point or another he could shoot any one or all of them out of the saddle.
