From School Library Journal:
Grade 7 Up-This volume bridges the gap between books with fashion-magazine appeal and serious medical reference works. Sources for the articles include government agencies such as the FDA, CDC, EPA, and National Cancer Institute, as well as professional organizations such as the American Academy of Dermatology, American Academy of Family Physicians, Skin Cancer Foundation, and numerous medical schools. Full citation information is provided on the first page of each chapter. Topics covered include skin basics, cosmetics, nail and hair care, skin cancer and tanning, various diseases and conditions, and care of injuries. Despite the variety of sources and authorship, a consistently calm and rational tone is maintained, clearly and simply presenting information that will help teens be proactive in caring for their skin. While well organized and comprehensive in coverage, this title includes only minimal black-and-white illustrations. Sidebars enhance the text, defining "Weird Words" and pointing out "Quick Tips" and key facts to "Remember!" Of particular interest are the extensive sections on piercing and tattooing. While pointing up the risks of both, the articles also provide in-depth information on post-procedure care and choosing a tattooist or piercing artist. The coverage of acne, its causes, and current courses of treatment is equally thorough. Lynne Lamberg's Skin Disorders (Chelsea, 2000) has more visual appeal but less overall information, making it a more likely starting point for reluctant researchers and general browsers.
