If the current growth rate of the Mormon Church continues, within the next century church membership will exceed 250,000,000, making it, as one non-Mormon sociologist noted, the first major faith to appear on earth "since the prophet Mohammed rode out of the desert." Where did this religion come from? What are the ideas which motivate Mormons and make the religion so attractive to converts throughout the world? How did these ideas develop? The answers to these questions form the basis of this fascinating history of the Mormon Church.

About the Author:
Thompson
From Library Journal:
Thompson presents a solid, basic history of the Church of Latter-Day Saints, founded in upstate New York in 1830. The Saints faced relentless persecution as they followed the prophecies and preachings of their founder, Joseph Smith, and then Brigham Young. Thompson (English, Univ. of Florida) pays good attention to the migrations by the faithful through Ohio, Illinois, and, ultimately, Utah. Ample space is devoted to an understanding of the church's early acceptance of polygamy and the final proclamation in 1890 that it would no longer be practiced. The last chapters deal with the skill that church members have exhibited in making their one-time rural church into an international one. There is a balanced bibliography (although Robert Gottlieb and Peter Wiley's important America's Saints , LJ 8/84, is noticeably absent). Despite a pedestrian writing style, this work will competently fill the need for nonscholarly information on this fast-growing church.
