PreSchool-Grade 3 A contrived tall tale that serves more successfully as a vehicle for Kellogg's illustrations. The golden-hued watercolors are filled with his usual detail, humor and action. The story centers around pioneer woman Iva Dunnit and her six fine childrenIda and Ivan, Ima and Isaac, Ira and Little Iris. They manage to survive alone on the prairie through their wits, strength and "young'uns that knows how to stay put." The main section tells how during a wind storm Iva loses her petticoats while retrieving four chickens. Eventually she winds up hanging off the roof with the four chickens tied to her corset strings. Kellogg's pictures are far superior to the text. He shows the kids having a pillow fight while mom imagines them angelically staying put, and Iva dreaming of corsets on chickens as her mind wanders while waiting to be rescued. Wit, strength or staying put seem little in evidence. Steer your readers toward any of the Sid Fleischman books, especially the McBroom series (Atlantic), for well-written tall tales with sly humor.
