From Kirkus Reviews:
Well-founded guidelines for healthy living, complete with information on both alternative, or complementary, therapies and conventional therapies. Physician Jessel-Kenyon is a consultant and co-director of the Centre for the Study of Complementary Medicine in Southampton, England, and Shealey is president of the American Holistic Medical Association. Their guide benefits from research/practice results from other countries as well as the US. Complementary therapies such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, naturopathy, and vitamin supplements have been integrated for years into mainstream medical practice in Europe and Australia to a degree not seen in this country, and this work reflects the benefits of such practice. In nine sections, the text discusses the body as a whole (the various systems and how to keep them healthy); men's, women's, and children's health issues; some specific diseases and disorders; and advice on a healthy lifestyle. Throughout, it considers how the mind, body, and spirit work together and can be supported for maximum good health. For each topic, the book gives basic information (``Asthma can be due to intrinsic factors such as an allergy to certain foods . . . ``), explains ``the Conventional Approach'' (e.g., what medications are generally in use), and then describes therapeutic/support possibilities of various complementary therapies. A useful survey of some established complementary therapies, with a commendable emphasis on considering body, mind, and psyche together when seeking to restore health. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP.
