In each, information is presented in a concise form, simplified clearly for younger readers of nonfiction. The different illustrators, though all working in the cartoon convention, vary greatly in their styles and techniques. The soft marshmallowy pastels of Ice Cream yield to the straight lines of Baseball Bats. The humans depicted in Crayons wear comical expressions, while Penny offers lots of colors, details, and funny mouse figures drawn into scenes. While both men and women are fairly evenly involved in the making of crayons, pennies, and ice cream, the only women that Reed shows in Baseball Bat are store clerks. These easy nonfiction titles will be welcome additions to children's collections.
